Headshot of Peter Woglom

Peter Woglom has over 25 years of experience supporting clients’ investigative needs in the context of pre-transaction due diligence, complex investigations, litigation support and multi-jurisdictional asset tracing assignments.

Peter’s global experience has given him the opportunity to work for a diverse portfolio of clients; parties that require nuanced insight on a grand scale, such as political analyses or white papers on industry and regulatory matters, as well as parties that need more focused work, such as investigations into counterparties or patterns of fraud and abuse. Whether through open-source research or human intelligence gathering, Peter has proven a trusted advisor by delivering critical intelligence that allows clients to navigate complex markets, satisfy compliance or regulatory requirements, or resolve high-stakes disputes.

Peter has published articles and spoken at conferences regarding the role of corporate intelligence in asset tracing, where his experience has included assisting creditor committees seeking to recover misappropriated assets to working on multinational exercises for sovereign entities. Most recently, he published articles on due diligence pitfalls and remedies in the private credit markets and on how a company contemplating an initial public offering can remediate potential governance problems.

Prior to Nardello & Co., Peter worked in the investigations practice at a leading global consulting firm, where he led bespoke intelligence and investigations assignments for investment managers, private equity clients and corporations.

In his role at a public accounting firm, Peter oversaw the practice’s capital markets work and led the team’s research efforts to support a long-running sanctions monitorship focused on a Chinese telecom company. Prior to this, Peter led the capital markets due diligence practice at an investigations consultancy and oversaw intelligence gathering assignments that required expertise from in-country sources for a variety of private equity, banking, and corporate clients.

Representative matters

  • For a private equity client contemplating a real estate joint venture in Mexico, Peter profiled the project’s founders and provided an overview of the political environment that explained the strategic implications of the founders’ high profiles, occasioned by media reports that alleged their involvement in money laundering and corruption.
  • On behalf of a high-profile client involved in significant litigation who, simultaneously, was the subject of a public #hashtag smear campaign, Peter undertook research to determine whether the campaign was being coordinated or amplified by counterparties to the litigation. Combining social media analytics and interviews, Peter gathered information about the origin, financing, and coordination of the hashtag campaign and explained to the client the connections between the campaign and the litigation.
  • Peter was retained by a Middle Eastern bank seeking to identify attachable assets to a UK judgment that had been domesticated in the US. The judgment targeted a high-profile individual subject to a worldwide freeze order imposed by a London court. Public record research identified real estate assets held in the names of immediate family members as well as likely fraudulent conveyances of US businesses to the subject’s son-in-law.
  • On behalf of a bankruptcy receiver for an investment fund, Peter examined recent transactions undertaken by the fund’s principal, who had been accused of concealing assets from the trustee and the creditors. Research found numerous transactions with newly formed vehicles set up by alleged proxies and developed information that contradicted several of the principal’s deposition statements.
  • Peter led investigative research to support an independent monitorship designed to assess the export control compliance of a Chinese telecommunications company subject to US sanctions. The research focused on mapping relationships and corporate structures to determine the entity’s ownership and identify those with ultimate influence over the company’s global network and sales of equipment for military use.
  • Peter led the US investigation into a Chinese steel company that was indicted for inflating revenues, laundering money, and operating a fraud scheme designed to evade paying anti-dumping duties. The investigation demonstrated how the company evaded duties by using a network of controlled companies it claimed were independent third parties. Interviews and public filing research identified those perpetrating the scheme and established clear links to the corporate parent in China.
