Representative matters

  • Lead investigator and litigation support advisor for $1.9bn fraud loss claim in the London High Court against the former UBOs of Ukraine’s largest bank following its nationalization. Claims arose following an initial forensic audit of the bank on behalf of the National Bank of Ukraine, of which Peter was a key team member. Peter analyzed transaction data to identify further claims in other jurisdictions totaling $5.5bn. The case required targeted unwinding of alleged money-laundering on a vast scale over a 10-year period, involving banks in multiple jurisdictions and a complex network of offshore shell companies. Peter coordinated evidence capture, forensic accounting analysis, transaction tracing and preparation of court-ready evidence, utilizing OSINT and HUMINT to contextualize the findings. Peter led the UK-based team and coordinated client and legal stakeholders in UK, Ukraine and overseas.
  • Acted as the project lead for a financial regulator-directed review into the operational effectiveness of AML controls at a Southern European bank, which had ownership connections to sanctioned individuals in Africa. He developed and executed a risk identification strategy utilizing internal bank data and OSINT, and oversaw data analysis across the bank’s full transaction and customer datasets to identify higher-risk customers, transactions and behaviors for detailed review, and subsequent remediation.
  • Developed and oversaw the methodology to successfully defend a counterclaim against a major European bank who had been defrauded by a gold trader. Using internal and law enforcement collected evidence, Peter led the efforts to cross-reference multiple datasets overlaid with publicly available market data to prove to the required evidential standard that the claimant was loss-making and suffered no damages.
  • Provided law firm support in defending a bank in multiple successful arbitration proceedings against bondholders, following bail-in of bank issued bonds worth hundreds of millions of dollars. Key tasks included financial investigation of accounting records and investment banking evidence, open-source research – including the coordination of international team members across four continents to identify connectivity between hundreds of international bondholders and a subject of interest – and drafting of witness statements for submission.
