As the US and China continue to ramp up AI development, IP theft in the semiconductor space remains a risk, as do violations of US export laws.
Considering the recent news regarding Zenith Semiconductor’s alleged misconduct, it is clear that issues related to semiconductors, China, and national security are intertwined. Tim Gallagher, Managing Director, Chief Security Officer & Co-Lead for Physical Security & Threat Mitigation at Nardello & Co. spoke with Global Investigations Review about Zenith’s case: “The fact that IP theft can hide in plain sight so easily means the role played by company employees in detecting it is particularly important,” he continues “I’m sure they are immediately trying to get a handle on it, because there could be a foreign country involved that could be the ultimate beneficiary of the technology as well.”
Drawing on his expertise as a former FBI official, Tim says: “It’s possible that the Department of Commerce, which occasionally works with the FBI, could have its eye on Zenith…there’s an export control angle to this, which I’m sure is being explored as we speak.”
