Headshot of Tara MacMillan

Tara oversees the firm’s operations, ensuring the quality of investigations globally and, as regional head of the Americas, directing its work in that region.

Having spent her entire career in investigations, Tara uses her expertise to manage complex litigation support investigations, due diligence exercises, and compliance reviews, in the US and internationally.

For several multinational clients, Tara manages international anti-corruption compliance relationships. She has helped clients develop compliance programs and set standards for vetting suppliers, distributors, and third-party representatives. To strengthen their review processes, she has designed custom questionnaires for clients and tailored reporting elements for employees and agents.

Tara also has extensive experience managing due diligence investigations. Firms interested in expanding into Latin America or Europe or considering international acquisitions have asked her to pinpoint concomitant risks—such as those associated with corruption and organized crime—by uncovering ownership interests and political and governmental affiliations. In corporate matters, Tara’s knowledge and research prowess have contributed to successful defenses in attempted takeovers, proxy contests, and tender offers.

In addition to due diligence and compliance, she has extensive experience leading investigations, uncovering the facts surrounding instances of fraud, embezzlement, and bribery, including those stemming from whistleblower allegations and those related to the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act.

Tara began her career as an investigative analyst with an international corporate investigations firm. While working for international consulting and risk management firms, she investigated not-for-profit organizations and fraudulent international banking transactions as well as conducting pre-transactional due diligence for private equity investments.

Expérience

  • For an international manufacturing company with several hundred intermediaries, Tara led the redesign of the compliance program. She and her team conducted on-site compliance audits of the vendors categorized as high risk, which were located throughout Asia, Eastern Europe, and Latin America.
  • To identify customers who could serve as defense witnesses in product liability lawsuits filed in several jurisdictions, Tara led a rigorous open-source research effort, directing the analysts who scoured traditional media, regulatory filings, and social media platforms and coming up with the idea to contact online affinity groups. Her vision paid off when her team identified more than 200 potential witnesses. Through supplemental investigation and interviews, her team winnowed down the potential witness pool by half, presenting counsel with a manageable number of well-vetted potential witnesses.
  • For a consumer products manufacturer that believed itself to be the target of an organized effort by short sellers to suppress its stock price, Tara headed an in-depth open source investigation of relevant parties. Her research revealed that several investors who claimed to have no links to the short-selling community had associations, including work histories, with certain high-profile and activist short sellers. Her research also showed how several subjects — in an attempt to camouflage their online identifies by purporting to be unique users — created multiple internet identities in order to make specious allegations anonymously. These findings were crucial to the client’s public relations strategy.
